I pick them up off the ground for other people that just leave them on the field.

I keep a few to practice changing them out, generally throw the others in recycling or the garbage.

I say save them up and take them in for scrap. Will it take a long time to get enough to take in? Yes it will. Are you cluttering up the field or tossing recyclable material in the trash. Not at all. Are you going to get a bit of a return on all the money you spent on the 12 grams? Yes you will.

Incidentally, does anyone know what the wall thickness of 12g cylinder is?

Anyone bored and want to cut one open and measure it?
I did a few years ago for a presentation on "thin walled pressure vessels". I cannot remember if a 12 gram falls into the ratio to be a thin wall or not. I can dig up my numbers when I get home if someone hasn't answered you before then.

I'd say they do. Wall thickness much smaller than length divided by 10 (general rule of thumb).

Now what to do with them? Smash them all together to make a big plate. Shoot the crap out of it with your favorite rifle. I guess it could be a way of saving money on targets. Once you're done, please recycle them. Don't toss away recyclable materials (if your city has proper recycling facilities...),
