I got mine pretty much the same way just this week... but whatever's in the barrel appears to just be dust. I wasn't too impressed with the packing but nothing was damaged either.

With a barrel as strong and light as a Deadlywind... it's going to be nearly impossible to damage during shipping. I can understand that the consumer might not be happy to have their barrel rattling around, but from an engineering perspective -- additional packaging is overkill.

All of my Lacpo barrels have been shipped the same way, I don't really see an issue.

We've never had an issue with the shipping from DW. If you are unhappy, why not contact Colin directly?

I ship a lot of barrels. It doesn't take anything too crazy to package them safely. I normally wrap them in a good amount of newspaper and toss them in a big brown envelope. I've sent 500+ barrels out in my time and I don't think I've ever had a barrel show up damaged. Newspaper is free too, so there really is no reason not to.

the "dirt" on the inside is usually stuff that gets inside the barrel from the packaging, you can run a squeegee though it and it will be perfect.

during the honing process and polishing process there is a lot of oil, grit, residue that can get into the barrel - some places clean it up others dont. I would be more pissed if I cleaned it up and it was still rough or ugly AFTER cleaning it up.

in the grand scheme of things after material costs are we really paying a lot to warrant the extra polish beforehand? perhaps? dunno - bottom line for me is if I get it and all it takes is 2 minutes and a squeegee - I am fine with that =)
