Splatmaster Barrel, question

I was in a hurry, tore my splatmaster apart, for a few different reasons :P

what is the purpose of the small circle that is on the opposite side of the splatmaster breech, behind the feedhole?

does it have to be there?

It's for the detent. A small ball (kinda like an airsoft pellet) goes there, and a small spring holds it in place.
