Paintball as an olympic sport.

Someone had to ask - I remember I used to race BMX when I was 10-14 years old and it seemed like a fringe sport - it had its olympic debut 4 years ago.

Does anyone see paintball ever reaching this - not necessarily within the next 4-8 years, but maybe 16-20-24 years?

Let's discuss this.

Not until the whole "honor system" thing gets ironed out...

The Olympics would never accept a sport where outright cheating is so prevalent in its largest "professional" formats..

what if in the future some sort of fencing system is applied - where technology will alert the refs a player has been eliminated.

or would this just be laser tag?

Much as I would love to see Paintball as an Olympic sport with the cheating that's involved I don't think it's realistic frankly. Until they can figure out a way to electronically eliminate players ie you're hit your gun is disabled and and on some sort of screen it's marked that you are eliminated so that refs can pull you if the hit is not in an obvious spot (pod pack for example)

I feel like competitive paintball will always be a 'dude' sport, and as much as BMX biking is one of those sports, I don't think a 'dude' sport that has such a high level of cheating will ever be involved.

Paintball is not a legitimate sport in most countries. Only US, Canada and maybe a few more accepts as a sport - in the rest of the world, paintball is seen as a "wargame" for people who wants to play war. Doesnt matter if it's speedball or woodsball, most governments in Europe still have the same attitude againt us paintballers.

Not to mention that the Olympics are all about peaceful competition, and I know there are lots of marksmanship related games, but the actual act of countries shooting at each other might not fly over so well. You and I know its really high speed dodgeball but that's not the image portrayed.
