Can you change the barrel itself? 20in just seems cumbersome and wasteful for a limited air source marker.

yes you can change the barrel out. any cocker threaded barrel will work

is it really that hard to slap the mag in correctly or do you think it'll get easier once you get used to it?

If the barrel is stepped, efficiency shouldn't be a problem.

once you play around with it a few times then it gets easier
