How To: Homemade Speed Caps

I get a bunch of questions about these at the field from time to time, so here's a rundown of how I make my speedcaps. There are a LOT of people who make similar things, so this is just one method of many.

If you don't run capless, this is a quick and easy (and cheap) way to save those green caps.

It looks like he uses the nib from the 2nd zip tie to keep the length from pulling out from the tape, right? Why not just use 1 zip tie by leaving it a little longer and making a bend near the end for doubling over, right?

EDIT: Oh I get it. The zip ties he uses aren't long enough to have that extra length. Thus the nib... Well, an idea if you've got longer zip ties.

The nib is there to give the e tape something to bite onto. You could just one the one zip tie but it will require more e tape to make a firm hold.

Originally, when I first did these a few years ago, I only used the one zip-tie, but after a few months they started pulling out of the tape. Adding the 2nd one keeps them nice and tight, but the long tails could still be pulled, moving the 2nd one up and shortening the length. It got to where a couple were too short to close, so I started trimming the ends and taping past the bottoms, which solved the problem.

The commercial caps are available from Titus at $0.18 ea, but this isn't a bad idea in a pinch.

These work great.

And to add to this, for those who are looking at those 30rnd tac pods or for ways to refil 50rnd hoppers easily...

DIY 30rnd pods using 10rnd tubes. Involves drinking beer!

I have some like these but without the second locking block. Great idea and they last so much longer than the factory made ones.

Someone also made some decorated with little skull bead which I thought was a cool idea to personalize them so you could pick yours out of a pile of every ones tubes on the table.
