As a Ref, AND someone who plays with a pistol backup, i'd say a big fat, NO, you are not out. If it got shot while on the ground i'd say its now 'out of play' but you are still live.

As a player, there are many times i let my 'primary' lie and continue after the enemy, it could be from mechanical failure, a bad chop, out of air/paint, or its just too big and i want to make a rambo run.

So, your telling me i'd have to carry my airless primary while shooting my pistol, or stay at the same bunker for the remainder of the game?

If the ref would call me "OUT" if i get 10 ft away from my airless primary, i'd have to say i'm not sure i like the judgement of the refs at that field, and would likely not give them return business. Its almost like if a ref were to tell you that because you ran out of paint you are "OUT".

imho

There are no universal rules whatsoever, and therefore this entire discussion is moot.

A National Tournament in the mid-eighties was decided on just such incident.

A player on "Team-A" left/dropped a camo bandana somewhere on the field.
After the game, which "Team-A" had won by body count, the player who owned the bandana went back on the field to retrieve it. When he returned a judge looked at it, and noticed a large blotch of paint. The player was called out, and the other team awarded the victory.

There was an after-game inquisition, and despite pleas from both sides, the judges ruling stood. If ANYTHING you have on your person is marked with paint larger than a US $0.25 piece, you are considered out.

The player in question who owned the bandana was further assesed a "Playing after hit" penalty for his team.

It is certainly a case by case situation. In the OPs post, I read it as he left his primary hanging in the wind as a distraction to the player shooting his bunker. How I read it, I would call him out.

However if I was reffing, I would have no problem with a player handing me their primary in the case they wanted to do a pistol run.

Best to tackle those questions for before game play. I would say thats just tactics and should be allowed but if the ref's or who ever makes the rules say different then you have to go with what they say. I personnaly like playing where gun hits dont count anyway (the norm at the field i play at) but often come across it elsewhere. Anyway I have to say that was a clever move on your behalf, i probably would not have attempted it...the idea of never leaving my 'weapon' unattended is way to ingrained in me.

Ah I'm giving style points for being a sneaky Basterd! And you guys are just jealous you didn't think of it first. He left it on the ground. Not hung in the air. After it was shot and didn't move the Op should have smelled a rat! I will say I would not want to see this trick used on walk on play. It's hard enough on a new player as it is. But in a scenario? Gray area's rule the day! Feyd............

^ this. If it's agreed to by all and everyone knows when you start the day that that is in the rules, then it would be fine by me. Anyone dumb enough to keep shooting at a marker that hasn't moved in five minutes deserves what they get anyway

Ask the ref. I've played many fields and everything changes depending on who and where you play.
