Also, don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, wear BRIGHT clothing. Like, a fluorescent orange hunting vest. That way people will notice your fluorescent orange vest off the field, and them will make the connection when they see it on-field.

If you wear dark clothing, someone will just seen the movement and shoot at it.

In shooting both woods and speedball, I have used a Kata waterproof cover to good effect. It snugs down around the lens, to help keep gunk from getting further in, and it is a fairly thick clear vinyl with openings for both hands (These can also be cinched in) and a heavy duty zipper. I have been hit in the camera, luckily no damage, and having that made clean up a breeze.

The problem with staying out of the line of fire is that many of the best and most exciting angles practically require being in the line of fire, especially when shooting video. Over the shoulder gunfight shots being the main example.

It's sometimes tempting to cut down a mask lens and duct tape it to the camera lens.

I've seen people use whippersnappers modded to be a little camera mask.
