Dual wield definitely separates the WoW dweebs from the COD douches

I remember back in '99 dual berettas in Counterstrike were commonly referred to as akimbo. I'm sure it goes back yet further.

So if we say "Florintine" we're what? SCA geeks?

No, you are simply historically literate.

On a little dig the phrase 'guns akimbo' turned up. Also keep hearing the Woo references. My suspicion is that someone may have thought that if 'arms akimbo' means the elbows are pointed out from each other, perhaps 'guns akimbo' meant that the guns pointed away from each other.

Thus we see all those goofy scenes with our action hero pointing pistols (or whatever) in opposite directions, blazing away.

That's the only linguistically plausible link that comes to mind (that doesn't simply fall into mere ignorance), but it is still incorrect.

Even if the word could be stretched to allow for pointing objects away from one another, one would have to remain in that posture in order to be considered playing 'akimbo'.

Quite possibly it is just a case of someone having a poor grasp of the language, then using it repeatedly or to a wide audience and, because the word is not frequently used, most hearers thought it sounded far too cool to be mistaken and hence, never bothered to check it, or to make a correction.

Rather like the exceedingly common misuse of 'peruse' to mean skimming over quickly, when in fact it means the opposite. But it is now so common most dictionaries list the corruption as an alternate meaning.

Who knows?
