Barrel swab BBD?

Is this a thing now? I have noticed that two of the local fields I have recently played at are pretty lax with enforcing the use of proper barrel blocking devices.

There were several occasions where players got yelled at by the refs for not having a BBD in place while another player right next to them had a swab jammed down their barrel. My Tribal with a DW Fibur will shoot a barrel swab across the room on the second shot, not to mention the paint that will follow it.

I would easily estimate that 25% of the people at the field were doing this. When did this become okay?

It isn't, but many speedball types seem to think bbd's are too much trouble and just stick a swab in it and think they are okay.

I would bring your concerns to the head ref and management and even demonstrate how unsafe it is.

I'm tempted to grab a gun and blast away with it at a wall, if I was at my home field I probably would but I am new to most of these fields and that might get bad attention. I will bring it up with the head ref next time I am there.

It is one of the most unsafe things I have ever seen, short of taking goggles off on the field. I don't even know if they have their guns turned off.

It is very unsafe I agree...

But I bet money that its not just these so called "speedball types".

If they are too lazy to properly cover their barrel you think they are enthusiastic enough to engage their safety?

Oh, I would agree, but at least at my field they are the ones most likely to do so. They are also the first to roll eyes and say well the gun is off anyways so I don't need one and then accidentally shoot off a couple of shots because it was in fact still on and they are walking around with their finger on the trigger. I wouldn't be surprised if it started with them and was picked up by the other less informed players. Might be the total opposite, at any rate it is not safe at all.

I noticed this several years ago at a field that did nothing but speedball (shall remain nameless)... I wouldn't call it a 'new trend' maybe 'agg' is just making it's way to your wherebouts :P

My field is very strict about proper BBDs, it must be a sock, not a plug. If you don't have a barrel sock, you rent or buy one; if you can't rent or buy one, your gun stays on the field when you come into the safe area. The method works very well to ensure that all players have barrel socks on their markers. There is usually someone near the edge of the field to harass players about barrel socks too.

Yeah, Im not a fan of this trend at all. I still yell at people to put barrel bags on their markers if I see this.

The only way I have ever allowed this is if they are using a pull through squeegee and it is hanging out both ends of the marker.

There are not too many markers out there that you can do that with anymore.
