Strange wood and a blazing lizard

Hardwood from dunnage pile has a flippen lizard thingy running though my stock.
I do not know what type of wood this is but its bad ash lookin.
Came from the shipyards in San Deigo, Ca.
Any guesses on type of wood....

It is not as dense as black walnut and files a bit easier.
I can not dent it with my thumbnail (its pretty dang hard).
Its about the same weight as the walnut and mahogany woods
I have been using.
I have one coat of boiled linseed oil/turpintine on it now - the black looks more gray when in the raw... This one is for a pgp pump pirate...
