bunkers got wider with airball. No longer are we hiding behind a two foot wide section of pipe or "hyper ball tubing". A longer setup can be very adventagous when playing on wide flexable bunkers but try that setup on a speed ball field from 10-12 years ago (theres my frame of referance from when I started) and it just wont work out well.

If loud pipes save lives imagine what bright pink helmets could do.

Can I just throw a small quibble out there? Oughtn't it be "drops forward," like "attorneys general" and "courts martial"?

But RE drops and their decline, I think the double trigger thing is the most important factor. If you're really walking the trigger, you can't really hold the weight of marker with that hand, so you cradle the tank in the crook of your arm, and that's your rear anchor point. With a drop, that isn't really possible, since the purpose is to drop the tank out of the way.

Exactly.
The tanks didn't change that much.
The fields changed completely.

The drops forward used prior to 2002 or so when Airball completely replaced all other fields were intended for play on small, low rigid bunkers; plywood "X"s, plastic barrels, pallets, and the like. Moreover, the player is sitting behind a flat obstacle rather than a concave or circular surface. There's simply less room to hold a gun at the ready and be close into the back of the bunker.

The trend going forward was towards taller, wider, inflatable bunkers played on narrower fields, so whereas a player in 1997 would often be concerned about shooting from a below-kneeling stance with his center of gravity behind his ankles, the modern player can assume a much more natural position without threat of exposing himself to fire from above or the sides.

I have only see one newer marker with a drop forward that was that Geo plus? because it a custom job and the guy wanted to a drop forward for it. Its the way of the dinosaurs, as I have never been a fan of them I just never got use to them and don't care for them. Older players who used them know and love them but too each their own.

But they have changed.

Last year, I went and bought a 68/4500, it did not fit properly in an Dye Rhino 68ci cover. It was very baggy on the end. The new 68ci tanks are the same length as the old peanut 70 ci tanks. When I bought the peanut tank, everyone's reaction was, "Wow that's short tank."

Tanks have gotten shorter and make it hard to use a drop.

That's a much more recent change, though.
Guerrilla and Ninja only recently started monkeying around with "standard" volume tank lengths, years after the drops forward disappeared.

Good points from many.

So I guess my answers are

A. Cant walk the trigger as well

B. Airball allows pushing & squishing "into" bunkers... so longer guns are alright.

C. No air hoses

My thoughts exactly. I understand that a lot of us play just for fun and don't care about winning and losing. Nor do the majority of the users here play in the PSP.

The layouts are almost geared to running and gunning. Probably has something to do with players can shoot more paint if they learn this skill...

But it is a very useful one to have to get you out of that "oh ****" situation.

If you are playing a recball field with all solid bunkers, then the drop forward is definitely going to make you play tighter, but not necessarily with better form.
