I'm building a Reprap MendelMax 1.5

I'm basing it on this design: Terawatt Industries' MendelMax 1.5 for LM8UU Assembly Guide

Using a Minitronics v1.0 board from here: Welcome to ReprapWorld.com
With a Lulzbot Budaschnozzle 2.0 hot end: Budaschnozzle 2.0 w/ 0.5mm nozzle | LulzBot

Here's a recent picture of the build:

I have since completed the Y axis. I just have to wire it up, make the build platform (using my own design), and calibrate.

i plan on buying a replicator 2x in a few months.. and i have every intention of making pico shells for people

but theres also a 2 month wait while they build it

jackson, they will need support.. sure they wont be as pretty as they could be if they were made with stereolithography.. but you take what you can get

The biggest issue I am seeing is the battery door. The clasp design just isn't ideal for 3D printing. The issue is inter-layer strength. The bond between two layers is significantly less than the strength within a layer. So you would have to print the door in an orientation that puts the spring force of the clasps within a layer and not between layers. Which means printing it with an edge down. But the edges aren't straight/perpendicular. And then the clasps are built unsupported in air.

Can it be printed? Yeah, with a lot of support. Is the hopper design pretty sweet? Yeah. But it was designed to be injection molded. Simply providing files in .stl format doesn't make it a 3D printed design.

you keep saying injection molding.. are you sure you dont mean stereolithography?
yeah injection is for massive runs of 1000's of parts, but in the "one to two" at a time sense that simon had in mind when he released it as open source.. stereolithography is the process the shells that simon is holding are made by

a high res SLS machine can do parts that look like a solid piece of plastic.. case in point, the original halo was prototyped in SLS before they switched to mass production

I know what stereolithography is. I have some prototype parts on my desk here at work made via stereolythography. You don't need drafted faces for stereolithography.
