If it's a concept rather than just a single part then it'll be up to you. But if it's just a special shape widget that does something a little better then I think the guys that said just make and sell 'em before someone copies it for cheaper are right.

The problem with trying to patent a one part widget is that someone else can modify it so very slightly and then claim that they developed their own solution in parallel and it was just the requirements of the function that make his and your's superficially the same.
