er.... that would be "sentiment" Shaggy. "Sediment" is something you find at the bottom of a river or a cheap bottle of bad wine....

I was looking at Ion's as well some time back as my one and only electro but I was only considering it if I could add on much the same mods as you to make it more servicable.

Hey now, just because drop forwards aren't "cool" anymore, doesn't mean it fails. I use drop forwards on most of my markers over the years, and will continue to do so. Sure does a number on evening out the weight of the entire marker.

I think the drop looks pretty good with the overall marker though. Good job.

I've been considering picking up an ION myself, just to have a cheap paint hose lol.

I bought an Ion a while ago too. So far I only have a brass barrel for it, and have a L7 Bolt and Stinger trigger on the way. I plan on CNCing a new body for it.

Thumbs up

To me the SP ION is the new Kingman Spyder. When I started in PB a few years ago, Everyone was dropping $$$$ into Spyders to Trick them out, Lower Pressure, Yada Yada. Now it's the IONs turn. And I agree. The ION is a Great Marker for the Price.

Chalk it up to a Monday assemblies I make a huge stretch to say Tippmann reliability. However, as my local shop puts it he has removed and replaced more valves in A5s and 98s then worked on Ions. The work on Ions are generally just upgrades like body kits and lighted eyes. He has a whole big repair kit he bought from SP I think and it has dust on it! He generally just sets them up for the customer and they play with it. He said it is the easiest money he makes on them plus the customer keeps coming back to him.

As for DYE, there is a reason why they have that big repair kit. He constantly has DYE markers in the shop. He had 4 PMRs dead out of the box from DYE. [He checks the markers as they come in.] 2 PM6 and 7 also DOA. The DMx models are on a per case basis.

For 525 bucks you can have a gun, loader, and HPA 4500 tank. The gun does 17 BPS out of the box and has limited or no issues. It is a good deal for the store operator. A low problem marker means repeat business and there a descent mark up. My local shop sees this on a weekly basis. They all buy the paint, get their air filled, and play for the day. They may buy a new barrel or another add on while in the shop. Now SP just released a version that comes with a 3000/68 maxflow set up on the gun. I think they are retailing for $320 or something close. My local store loves it! He'll get more business on fills, ASA set ups and a larger tanks when the player needs to upgrade.

When there was a Tippmann vs Kingman on the wall of the store. It was 75 percent of those two guns. Now all the Kingman stuff is literally ordered on a case per case basis. Then came all Tippmann. There was one row of everything else and one row of close out. everything was Tippmann. Now SP has taken over the wall since that is what the local populous wants. If they spend 250 on a gun, they are getting the Ion over the A5. Which is good for the owner since he sells the loader and the tank instead of gun and tank. He has about 4 stock Ions in different colors, a few upgraded ones the Eiphiny sp?, and a couple of SP8s. Tippmann has a baseline 98, standard 98, an A5, and an X7. One row with a sign next to each one saying R/T trigger and camo options available. If it is not on the wall, it's in the back room.

I really think the Ion is a real all around winner from what I have seen and dealt with. A friend of mine was going to buy a Tippmann but he saw my wife's Ion, he said he wanted to try it out. I had recently acquired an used Ion from a local kid who needed money. So after a weekend of play, my friend wanted to buy the used Ion I had. He loved the way the gun shot. This past weekend my friend was with me at Castle and he was using the used ion, there was always a smirk on his face when he was coming off the field. He said the gun shot better than anything he had ever used.

Seeing the marker from a store perspective, owner perspective, and player perspective, it has a lot going for it. I know several Ions bought as play toys and back ups being used as primaries now. one guy on the team that I play with uses one over his 1300 dollar DM7! The DM just sits in the bag since he likes using his Ion more.

To each his own,
shaggy

This thread got me thinking.

Ion = plastic on the outside, aluminum on the inside.

A-5 = aluminum on the outside, plastic on the inside.

Which would you want?
