Yeah, for a new one, the ER2-s is great for the price. A buddy picked me one up because we wanted to know, and now we've got 3 of them as loaners for when we want to have stock class day at the field.

ER2-S is the cheapest in product gun.

The Splatmaster would probably be your best used gun for the cheapest.

After that, the PGP, PMI on the used end. But those are getting harder to find in good condition it would seem.

After that, any sub $100 pump gun, put on a stick feed and 12 gram and have at it.

After that... Save up for a Carter Machine Buzzard.

If he eventually goes to a high-end pump, I'd go with a Phantom, personally. They're light, customizable, and I've never had a single problem with mine in thirteen years - not one.

I've picked up a couple non-stockclass Phantoms on PbN for around $60-$70. I'd go that route simply because it's a gun you'll actually want to keep and will work for years. Add a PVC stick feed and a cheap 12 gram and you'd be set.

Or maybe just a cheap Traccer/Hornet or similar from the b/s/t here. They can be found for around $40 with a little searching.

Actually, when I eventually go to a high-end pump it'll be a sniper.

But yeah, I think I'll be tracking down a Splatmaster.
