Most electros these days are really good on batteries. As long as it's not a sear tripper, it will last a long, long, long time. (Sear trippers require the bigger moods that take more juice). As far as I know there aren't any that have problems with draining the battery when the gun is off either.

Break-beam (as used by virtually all current guns) are better than older style reflective (think E-Blade). 'Laser' eyes are just marketing hype and an aesthetic choice - they still use IR to detect balls but have a visible light emitter too. Virtue make coloured laser eye boards for the Axe which are only a couple of dollars more than stock.

Quote:
One of the complaints people seem to have about the Axe is the fact that the eyes are soldered to the board, which does seem a bit inconvenient, but is this really a problem, or merely a perceived problem?
It's only a problem if the eyes go wrong - in which case you need to spend $25 on a replacement eye board, rather than $10 on some wired eyes. In everyday use it isn't a problem at all and I don't know anyone who has needed to replace the eyes in their Axe.

What are the best type of detents? Soft rubber? Ball-and-spring? Advantages/disadvantages of each?
Personally I always prefer ball and spring style, or better still magnet + piston - I've never had to replace either type on the ULE bodies or Axe that I've had. Rebuildable magnetic ones are nice as it makes it easier to clean the insides in the event on a breech break. Rubber fingers (Angel 1, Ego) work fine but are wear items and need to be swapped out fairly reguarly to avoid double feeding.

Also, which systems have the most readily available replacement (not upgrade) boards?
Replacement Axe boards (Shockwave) are widely available new and cheap ($26.95), don't know about other brands.

Quote:
Which systems are hardest on batteries, or does it just depend on the marker?
Most modern guns are light on batteries. Personally I'm an overly cautious type and always fit a fresh 9v before play, but I have teammates who leave batteries in their Axes for 3 or 4 events.

Much appreciated, both of you.

Especially the good loader advice.

Sad News

Gang, looks like I'm going to have to table this. Have been issued a cease and desist as far as an electro is concerned.

This was pretty upsetting to me, as I've really enjoyed the search, have been looking forward to getting my first, and have much appreciated all the help so many of you have given me, both here and via pm.

It's been busy around here, but was really hoping to make a decision by early next year and snag one, but unfortunately it isn't going to happen.

Because Santa was already keeping a list, and in the process of snagging me one.

Unfortunately I blundered right into the middle of everything and completely ruined the surprise.

No need to spoil it again for you all now. Can't use this until Christmas, so that's when it will be 'unwrapped' here. Will likely follow up with a review sometime later for good measure.

For now my great thanks, especially to all of you who entertained mountains of questions off air. And feel free to laugh, as I've gotten so interested in these that, yes, I may well be getting another down the road.
