for the Collectors, hoarders and whores; what's your rules?

Painthappy's hoarding post got me thinking. I personaly have a set of rules (guidelines) that although unwritten (til now), I try to live by when gun buying, and I was kind of curious what other people had for self imposed rules. Now, I have very specific set of tastes so I immediatly elminate 99.99% of the guns out there instantly and my rules result from that.

Mine:
1. Am I going to use it? (that right there elminates most electro's and hinge framed cockers)
2. If i am not going to use it, is there any real reason to buy it? (i've bought too many i am not going to use, and thats why i've really started to stick to this one, I almost always sell these otherwise. theres a few exceptions, but not many)
3. Do i already have one? If so, do I really need another one? (not many meet this requirement, and usually it comes down to cosmetic differnces so I end up placing far less priority on a secound one)
4. Why do I want it? does it just look cool, or is there an interesting history or feature? (looking cool counts for a whole lot less then other factors, and if the only answer is looks nice, I might still pursue it, but I really try to stick to bargain hunting at that point)
5. is it original or has it been rebuilt, replaced or otherwise altered if the original was what was of value to me?
6. if yes, is it worth restoring, or is the value to me mostly in the original mechanics? (this is usually a killer for me, I started collecting to try out guns. Since I am buying used, I have to allow a certain leeway, but the less leeway I allow the better the results I find. I actually prefer to buy from the clueless rather then the tinkerer)
7. how good is the condition, any damage (eye holes are damage and almost always eliminate the gun from consideration)?
8. is it a good example of its kind? (If i know I will have a chance at a nicer one, i'll usually pass up a plain or less desirable marker now. I've violated this a couple of times, and I end up looking for nicer examples, It is a collection afterall; but I then end up going back to rule 3 and start bargain hunting rather then seriously pursuing).
9. Is it worth the risk? (this comes down to seller feedback, payment method, price, all that, if its high dollars and I don't trust the seller, then its 3rd party time if i even try to do a deal)

Your rules resemble my thought process pretty well when I'm being rational. However, most of my purchases are highly impulsive so I can't say I have a defined set of rules or a standard process.

I usually try to rationalize why I want something and if there is any need for it. The answer is usually either "looks cool" or "wanted one when I was younger" in the first case. The need question is typically, no, I don't need it. I often buy anyway.

Edit: My interest is primarily limited to Sheridan derivatives, so I'm usually after those kind of markers. Nelsons generally don't interest me much.

I used to buy whatever hit my fancy. Alot of things that I wanted 15-20 years ago that I could not afford. Unique, cool. Then I realized that I never played with any of them.
Now my whoreing is pretty limited to WGP/Bud Orr, Lada/Arrow Precision, Lapco.

For this I play the female card.
Do I have the whim to purchase it?
Can I afford it?
Will I use it? In the mean time will it fit the decour?

One simple rule;

If I have to think about it first, then I can't afford it.

Easy!

Will my wife draw and quarter me, then string me up, or will she just shoot me when she finds out?

Actually, I get worse than that, the look of "you know you don't need it, there's no room for it, you won't use it, and it cost more than it should have" without her needing to say or do anything..

Worst thing about it, she's right..

I don't buy wall-hangers. If it's too pretty to use, then I pass. I use every one of my markers.

Like most, I have a huge list of stuff I'd like to own. And for a while I bought anything from that list that was a great deal. Then I ended up going from 2 to 22 guns in the span of about 8 months...
So for the time being, I'm only working on my Montneel collection. I'm currently at the point with it that the more rare stuff that I don't have is all that I'm looking at, so its been easy to abstain. But when my collection is "complete", and/or I come up with more disposable income, I'll probably have to come up with some new rules...
