| I Am The Admin | Hoarding Dilema 2 - When to give up that last "Goodie"
So here is part 2 of this seemingly endless series of mind thoughts I've been having. When to give up that LAST piece of gear that you may have... That you'll never get again. We hoard the gear... But what do you do with it? Can you sell it? But if you sell, how do you put a price on something that is priceless to you? Sure that power tube might only be worth $10.00 but if you know you won't get one again, is it still only worth $10.00? Someone was looking for a Razorback powertube in a separate thread. While I was reading it, I'm staring at my razorback kit that HAS a powertube in it. I only have this one or two somewhere... Do I give it up? Of course sometimes that decision is easy. I had a Vector sight rail (a very rare and hard to find piece) that was New Old Stock. Steve (aka Oldschool) needed one. While I probably wanted to continue hoarding it, I didn't hesitate to hand it over. I knew he needed it, and it would look great on his gun that was lacking one. I didn't have to put a price tag on it thankfully... What did I trade it for? This Razorback kit that now sits in front of me. So do I now open this sealed case and hand off the powertube and do my part in continuing to keep these old guns running? Or do I keep it selflishly on the chance that I may need it, or a day where it's importance to me will mean more? I don't know. I still can't put a price on it, and doubt I'd be able to put one on high enough to meet my hoarding standards. Being hard to find, I'd want top dollar. Since I won't be able to find one myself. But the part of me that wants to keep the old guns running would gladly give it away. In the end, I know it will be given or traded away. I'm soft like that. But when do you give up that last part? I don't think there's ever a good answer to that question. To each of us, it'll be different. But just more food for thought to be tossed onto the collective cognitive fire.

I've been having that dilemma with the 45* cooper-t asa that came with one of my megaz's. Its rare for several reasons. Cooper t first off, but its also black, and it came as a factory montneel option(latter is the main reason I've held onto it). however, I'll probably never use it. I could probably fetch a decent price for it. But will I ever be able to find another for my collection? But do I even care if it is in my colection? Not while I have it, but how will I feel after I sell it? I already sold one to chevdave, and somewhat regret it, because it fit nicer than the one I have now... Blah, blah, back and forth, I'll probably just keep the damn thing.

I might have a answer. we are not the only group of enthusiasts that are running into problems finding parts (car restoration) how they handle it is with an aftermarket. I am a mechanical desiginer for a living. and until my home computer blew up I was disassembling measuring and solid modeling some of my more rare markers with the thought that I would donate the open source models and prints to vintage rex for restorers to use as they see fit. I do not think that this will hurt the "original" part value, but it would allow a now useless wall hanger to be put back into service. any thoughts? |

That is an excellent idea. If I had the skill to do this I would like you put it out there open source.

I thought that would be awesome, and there IS a market for 'replica' markers such as the Redux and the Redux/Box Gun. I don't use e-bay so I rarely ever wind up with a ton of rare parts lying around myself. Closest I get are the occasional Taso frame I stumble across (I have 2 of 'em for cockers and one for a Spyder. Gotta finish the latter now.) I won't part out a marker that's in full working order but if it's lying around missing a few parts I'll help out if I can. |

Aftermarket is fine... as long as there is a call for it. 100 or so aftermarket razorback powertubes is great sounding and all, but if it's not economically feasible, then you're not going to want to do it. This idea has potential though. Just regretfully there will be parts that are not economically viable.

I tend to go with whatever mood strikes me. Do I want to help someone that day? Do I think they will someday pass on the same good will to someone else? Fickle is a female.

My advice- Help him out. I would about guarantee that somewhere along the way someone has handed you a hard-to-find part and thought nothing of it, because it was more valuable to you then it was to them (as the giver). You may give the part away and later get something you really need. Call it Karma, paint-fu, or the priciple of giving. It works. I've given away a lot of stuff, some I'll never find again, but I get more out of seeing it help someone else.
