| Automated Sentry Gun I don't read these forums very often, but I saw this on youtube and I just felt like I had to share it... If it has already been posted I'll delete the thread and go about my merry way ![]() YouTube - Portable Autonomous Sentry demonstration Any thoughts? |

| I think they're sweet but after tons of discussion around how to design / use one in the sport and obvious challenges around rules and safety, I don't think they have found a place in paintball. That one is one of the better ones I've seen. Here's another vid... poor guy, all he wanted was a beer... YouTube - MAN vs SENTRY: Exhibit A

| Damn, that thing is vicious. I really can't see where something like this would be needed within the sport though.....I guess it could be mounted on top of one of those little remote control tanks just to punish your opponents. |

| Actually I can see an awesome use for this: Snapshooting practice. Just like a tennis ball gun for practice, or a baseball gun for batting practice. Turn the sensitivity down a bit, or maybe only allow it to fire in 3 round bursts. Rig up a dinner-plate sized pressure plate to the fire control circuitry so if it's hit it'll stop shooting. Hide behind a bunker, and duke it out with the sentry gun. It could also use an 'empty hopper' sensor so it doesn't shoot blanks when it's out of paint, you can turn it off to intimidate with blank firing or turn it on to save gas during practice. I wonder if you could use some sort of iridescent or reflective paint that the sensor could check to see if the target has already been hit before firing? That would make it much more useful and safe. |

| Like I said with the "paint-jet" printer thing, these are perfect for use in the larger scenarios, either for base defense or just to mess with people during the night game. Assuming the velocity isn't an issue, I don't see it as a safety or rules problem. It's not going to shoot you from too close, since it will shoot you from far away first (not that I've ever been to a scenario game where a 'no shooting w/in X feet' rule was enforced... too much of a PITA). And w/r/t overshooting... run the hell away from it when you're getting lit up.

| I, for one, welcome our new metal overlords. That thing is intense. I have to do some AI-related stuff later on in my degree, I may give this a shot as well, although I'm going to see if I can get it to be a bit friendlier. |
