Did the mom buy the paintguns?

At least in Maine, you have to be 18 to buy paintball guns. Probobly also 18 in CT. Most retail places also place the age at 18 volentarily.

Chances are, an adult bought those paintguns. They are not toys. They have the potential for extremely serious injuries if used improperly.

I do feel really bad for the mother, and hope the kid gets better. But the injury is the fault of the mother, as well as the "friends" guardians for doing... well... parenting.

Yes, its tough being a parent. My son likes playing with the stove, and my daughter would spend 24-hours a day in our pool. Both very dangerous if unsupervised. But I don't leave them unsupervised.

What the hell kind of a stupid name is CHRESTEIN? Poor kid never stood a chance...

Is there something we as a paintball community can do? Are there people we can write to? We could start a counter campaign to help educate the public and the legislature.

Edit: PS Carter, MCB gets Googled pretty regularly, maybe a section on paintball safety is in order for responsible parents who wish to search for information?

funny you should ask, i was looking around at babynames.com to get the ethnic origin and 'meaning' behind certain names.

Like...

Walter = German origin, "strong warrior"

so I went back to that site and tried it out, came up with...

Chrestein = modern american origin, "parents can't spell"

"It's hard to legislate common sense."

Sad thing is, you shouldn't HAVE to. I'd bet all my gear that no one there had a chrony and that there wasn't a designated "safe" area AND that no barrel bags/plugs were even considered, that much is obvious considering how the kid got injured.

I've had a friend ask me to set up a paintball thing for his kids in his backyard (he's got a good 8 acres of woods). I told him that I'd do it but I'd have to have God powers regarding rules and regs - meaning that no one was gonna ride me if I sat a kid or two out for breaking the rules. Never heard back from him about it.

IF (and when) a kid breaks his leg, arm, gets paralyzed, ad infinitum playing football you don't hear about petitions and bans. If she tried to get football banned they would string her up as a witch. Blame someone else, it seems to be the American way now that the trial lawyers have taken over.

Well there are no trial lawyers involved. She's not sueing anyone (surprisingly). If it happened at a friend's and she wasn't there and didn't know the friend's parents very well, there would probably be a lawsuit in process.

As it is, she is trying to get the government to regulate/police our industry. As I've said before, if we don't get to the point where we police ourselves (like the diving industry does), it's just a matter of time before the heavy hand of government comes in and does it for us. It's happened in other countries.

The field operator they interviewed made a very good point, as well:

"'Paint ball (sic) gets a bad rep because of people who get their kids a paint ball (sic) gun from Wal-Mart and then leave them alone with it in the backyard,' Brierton said. 'I would basically blame those kids' parents. ... They are not taking responsibility for their kids.'"

I go back to we stop treating these things as a gun, and it becomes a toy.. a marker. We stop teaching kids about guns (other than evil mass murder things that horrible people own and use... except for cops) and are suprised when they dont respect it.

We stop teaching them to respect each other and themselves.. well, it just keeps going.

Are you saying we do not?

Most states/fields/etc utilize age restrictions on buying and using paintball equipment.
Fields usually go well above DOT rules regarding tanks.
Most fields regulate firing modes.
The industry is very strict about goggles, and specific rules regulate that.

I do not see how we are -NOT- policing ourselves? What would you do different? Ban renegade paintball?

This reminds me of the "Henrys verses Brass Eagle" mess of the late 1990s.
The "Henrys" were 2 guys named Henry that owned a famous paintball magazine. They hated Brass Eagle, and constantly slandered them in the magazine. Brass Eagle eventually countersued, and won. So, the Henrys tried to claim Brass Eagle itself is negligent because it was selling guns without masks. Brass Eagle countersued that, but then the Henrys tried to slander them by saying the masks were unsafe, forcing a messy recall.

Is that the kind of policing you are looking for?
