Ever heard of paint being too fresh?

A couple of months ago we played a tourney and used some paint that litterally had been made a couple of days before and delivered to the event. The series is sponsored by this brand of paint.

It performed really badly. Good and round, but wouldn't break on ANYTHING. Fast forward to last week, and some of this paint is left being sold by the owner of one of the hosting fields, and it performed flawlessly. The owner called the manufacturer who says that normally, they "age" thier paint a couple of weeks just because of problems like this, and normally would not even have delivered that batch, but were running too low to fill the order otherwise.

I was always of the impression that the newer the paint, the better. Has anyone else ever heard of such a thing?

Haven't heard it, but I can understand it as being plausible. Gives the gelatin time to fully cure to the proper solidified state perhaps?

EMR Spring Castle of this year. Paint was very very fresh. So fresh there was oil in bags. Paint wasn't dry and it didn't perform great for everyone. It should have been dried for a lot longer.

I'm sure it depends on how long the shell needs to dry/cure/solidify or whatever it's called. You ever tried to wash off a paintbrush that's somewhere in between wet and dry? It's a little goopy, but will rinse off without too much effort. I think that's probably what happened with your paint.

Interesting, have not run into that particular situation before. I would think fresher is better - but is there such a thing as "too fresh?"

I'll ask the question of my local field next weekend - they receive their paint directly from RPS, pretty much the first stop out of the factory, so I'm sure they have a better idea of what works vs. what doesn't.

Yes.... If the paint isnt dried long enough its still kind of rubbery and oily. Also and we see this at work in the winter, if the paint just came in from the frieght company it may be cold and brittle because of it.

So yes there is such thing as too "fresh"

EMR's Viper game 3 years ago. The paint was a few days old I believe. It flew straight, but was like rubber bullets flying around. I remember it bouncing around the bunkers like one of those super balls. I even took a bounce off my mask lense.

Needless to say it was a weird feeling watching the paint ricochet off my mask like it did.

I keep cases of paint in my closet for months and it stays shooting like it did when I first got it so I can see it being plausible for it to be "too fresh"

Having the PB maker right up the street we get fresh paint alot. It isn't uncommon around here.
