This has been discussed before.

.50 balls have a better aero profile than .68 balls. .50 first strike rounds will obviously have better aero than .68 first strike rounds.

But it's still a matter of paint technology.

.50 would be a much superior ball at 3.2 grams weight.

.50 would be a much superior FS at 3.2 grams weight.

The tough part is how to get it up to 3.2 grams.

But .68 FS rounds offer the versatility of being used in .68 guns.

.50 balls offer the ability to shove twice as many of them into a hopper.

With a 50 FS round, you would give up a lot of the advantages available to each. They won't fit in a hopper, so you can't fit many more of them. And you'd give up putting them in conventional guns. Including the .50 guns available today, if you elongate the round.

What about a 50 FS @ 1.5 grams?

Wha?

I already proved that the effects of drag on a paintball is negligible. We're talking force of drag on the order of 0.00000x lbs. Negligible. So what makes a .50 better than a .68?

That was my thoughts on it, but then the longer ball would either need to be loaded one at a time or a longer bolt would be needed.

Of course we're talking first strike guns here anyways, and I would assume that a .50 cal FS gun would require basically an entirely new internal system including magazines, so why not just design a new gun around it?

I would tend to think that the drag would negatively impact the 50 FS round alot more so than the 68.

Less weight and size on the 50 would mean the drag would affect the 50FS round more so. Im no engineer but I think I have a decent grasp on the ideas at play here.

Whoops.. you caught my Gordo... was trying to get that typed as I was getting called to run to a meeting, so I wasn't thinking.... I actually only did the math for a drop. I can go run the drag calc for a ball in flight unless you would rather do it.

not particularity. just from our dual chrono stuff the drag force on a paintball is pretty large.
