Guards have been JB welded onto two knives. Tang nuts have been drilled and tapped for two knives. A practice rivet head pin was done.... and a 14ga copper rivet head pin was created.

Things are slowly coming together. Expect a knife for sale here next month... maybe in time for valentine's day.

Some photos of the blades with the guards on:

This is the one that will have the stacked leather washers and cherry:

My friends knife:

That curved piece of metal with angled point is something I use to scrape the JB weld off the blade and guard.. it's brass so it doesn't scratch the steel.

My son and I were down cutting the spacers for the leather/cherry handled knife earlier.

The knife for my friend is on hold until I get one more part in.

Getting the spacers on:

The rest from that set are here:
http://s826.beta.photobucket.com/use...20and%20Cherry

That includes both pieces of brass.... the spacers: White, Red, White, Blue, White and the first piece of leather. The rest of the leather will be glued in with waterproof carpenters glue. The cherry will be epoxied in and the last piece of brass (pommel) will the JB welded on along with the tang nut. This knife will be for sale.

Waiting on the other knife for any sort of build up as I'm waiting for a piece for the pommel.

Those handles look pretty damn slick, Schmitt.

What was used to bond the hilt before JB weld was available?

Thanks!

Originally.... nothing. Once tin was discovered they tried that. It's okay to use, but you have to be very careful so that you don't anneal the base of the blade. With a thin guard like the false one (disc) I could have brazed it with silver solder, but I had the JB already mixed up for the thick guard (royal PIA to keep evenly heated enough to braze) so I used it on this disc also.

Also with old swords and knives it was the pommel that held the whole thing together.... get the tang red hot, put the pommel on and rivet the tang so none of it would go anywhere.

I finally took the time to read the whole thread rather than being an impatient 1st grader and looking at pics. I'm very impressed and excited!

Thanks!!!!!

I squished some leather for washers the other day... and haven't had a chance to glue up the leather and cherry knife. Been spending my free time working on my new house and getting my current house ready to sell.

I've also been trying to decide what wood to get for my knife. Still need to order up the bolsters and pins and some tooling for that (taper drill for when I rivet the pins). I also picked out the blade for my wife's knife so i want to order that along with the tooling and parts for it... and trying to determine what wood for that too. Both will have hand made leather sheaths. But I don't see completing mine this year. I hope to get hers done for Christmas.

I still want to take some orders soon, but don't want to commit to anything until I get moved to the new house in April as I'll need to pack up the shop and keep things clean at the current house within the next couple of weeks If you see any pictures of things they will probably be in the glued up state, but without shaping.
