HOW TO: Multicam Paint Jobs

Mask painted. Details of the process to follow; it's actually quite easy with 2-inch painters masking tape, Krylon Fusion rattle can paint and an Xacto knife and cutting board

Results:

I believe four to five colours is enough:
  • ivory and dark brown for the top "splotches"
  • tan base with a dusting of the same brown as the top spotches
  • hunter green and a "ivy leaf" green for mid-layer fades

I've quoted some of Shartley's posts from another forum and attached photos as well as a graphical DIY a rifle stock being layered with Multicam colours.

...I use standard spray can paints, but made for plastics (Krylon and Rustolium... making sure the Krylon is the base and final layers).

I use 4 colors:
  • tan
  • oregano
  • hunt club green
  • brown

I then also go over it all with a satin clear to even out the texture and dull the shine.

For stencils I use standard sticker paper ( the kind you put in your printer to make home made labels and stickers ), a pen, and an exacto knife. I draw out the shapes I want and then cut them out and do the painting. It is a lot of work, but nice when it is finished.

As folks probably remember, I did the same thing for my mask and it is holding up great. Looks the same as the day I finished it.

This mask is a bit more flexible, but I don't think it will be an issue because of the paints used. They are much better than in years past.

I posted the following on another forum… it is a tip to make sure your Multicam paint jobs (should you decide to do one yourselves) look like Multicam and not just a nice camo using Multicam colors:

The thing I need to stress on these paint jobs is that it is not like most other camo where you work with solid colors and color areas. Multicam has fades in both the background as well as layer areas going in the opposite directions in fades. THEN it has some solid brown and tan/cream areas on top of the double layer fades. If you don’t take your time and make sure you do the fades and transitions it will not really look like Multicam, but a standard camo in Multicam colors.

Another tip would be to make sure you keep all your patterns on a horizontal line. Multicam has a right and wrong orientation, just like Tiger Stripe and even some digital camo. It will work in any orientation, but BEST when it is oriented horizontally.

The background fades/transitions are done in a vertical or slightly diagonal as are the next layer of fades/transitions within camo shapes. But the shapes (for the second layer of fades) and “blobs” go in a horizontal layout over the two layers of fades and shapes. I hope that made sense. To better see this, look at the Multicam fabric I placed the mask on. It should all click for you.

All of this is very important to pull off the look. And I took a LONG time just studying the fabric to see how it all worked (as did Wookie and Dbug who do marker paint jobs).

I hope this helps folks.

I did something like this with digicamo and have advise to pass along :

Do NOT use graph paper with spray glue. Everything goes down hill real fast. Don't cheap out : Go get the actual stickyback paper. Graph paper is very light and usual results in getting the solvents trapped/screwing up your paint job.

I've been looking for locally available paint in both Krylon Fusion for plastic and Rustoleum for plastic.

The closest matches that I find for a four-colour Multicam match seem to be:

Krylon Fusion Camo in Khaki and Brown
Krylon Fusion for plastic in Hunter Green and Satin Khaki (seems mid-way between standard khaki and brown)

Either tonight or tomorrow I should be able to pick some of this up to verify those colours work.

This the closest match to Multicam tan ive found (way closer than Camo and Satin Khaki) (Bad pic though, not really showing the actual color)

The texture can easily be removed with steelwool. but the color is spot on.

EDIT - I've found FIVE Krylon colours that offer a good match for the Multicam palette. A sixth colour could be injected but five is becoming a handful to layer without completely covering up base layers.
  • ivory and dark brown for the top "splotches"
  • tan base with a dusting of the same brown as the top spotches
  • hunter green and a "ivy leaf" green for mid-layer fades

Here's a photo, sitting on top of actual Multicam material, both 500D and 1000D Cordura:

That looks fantastic. I'll have to get my mask done soon so that it'll match our new team jerseys...

I've done the mask in my avatar in a multicam pattern last year. Here's a link to my "How-To" thread, explaining what colors I used, and how I made my stencils: Painting a V-Force Grill Multicam

The biggest tip I can give is to get a swatch of cloth and actually study the pattern. There's a right way to do it, and a wrong way.

What about prep work? Neither of you used sand paper or primer? I've shot my pb stands with blue Krylon for plastics and the stuff scratches off easily on the areas that I didn't sand.
