Do you happen to have a crude MSpaint diagram of the wiring on the jack/How you wired in the PTT button? I am terrible with everything wiring related so google is of little help.

I have a set of These to play with and would love to be able to outfit the refs at the field with them without breaking the bank

edit :

Specifically now that I have the 2.5mm plug in hand, where do I mount what? Does it matter, since it's all connected to the same piece of conductive material? What I see is This

So my understanding is that the "live" wire and the ground of each component (Mic/Ear bud respectively) will be housed in those two sections as seperate entities.

You're confusing me a little with the way you're wording this..

The 2.5mm plug should be 3 sections, not 2. A "stereo" plug. To reiterate what I posted earlier the wiring is as follows;

Tip: Speaker
Ring: Mic
Base: Common Ground

It should look like the picture in post #7, 3 sections separated by black insulation. It's just a matter of figuring out what goes where. Usually you can just look at it and figure out this part is connected to that...if not, then you need some kind of continuity tester...most people just use a multimeter. You can get a chepo one for $5 these days...

7 Function Digital Multimeter

Making the PTT button is easy. Wire a momentary switch in series with the mic. If the switch is "closed" you're transmitting. If it's "open" it's not.

Imagine taking a knife, and cutting the "hot" wire that goes to the mic. If it's cut, you're not transmitting, if you touch the bare wires together, you are.

I'm sorry, I'm just sitting here trying to figure out how to explain it simpler than that but I can't. My bad It's really the most rudimentary type of wiring there is...probably your best bet is to ask around the field and find someone who knows wiring and has a soldering iron. It shouldn't take very long to find someone.
