I would say much is left to the users ability to judge known targets size. Ill post up some photos and if possible a full review of the whole app for paintball purposes.

I use a simmons range finder. The eye relief sucks but it gets the job done.Just get in a good position and range a few objects write it down on a range card sit back and spot targets and shoot.

^ This is smart prep. From reading Trinity's Blog I see he also advocated the same technique. Also how accurate is google earth for measuring distance? Could one not just pull up their local field and measure bunker distances?

Im a big fan of that technique as well. Being as how im cheap though lol in pull up the places that i typically play at on google earth and write down on the scenario map printout various ranges from certain key points

Thats a good idea...i was thinking of using a smart phone for that by carring it in one of those sport arm bands on my forearm and marking the bases as way points and seeing where i am compared to them.

Google Earth can be very accurate for measurements in the horizontal plane but, it's highly dependent upon the accuracy of the underlying elevation data. For a test you can do at home, go into google Earth and measure an assortment of football fields. With a tape measure or rangefinder, Measure the length of your fence, house, etc, to get 'ground truth' and then compare that to the same measurement in Google Earth.

One thing Google Earth will not do well is measure slant ranges (i.e. the actual distance walked up or down a hill versus the lateral movement).
