Okay, guys. I entered the twilight zone. I had planned on not exerting myself as hard, and tacking on an extra lap. Sure enough, I got 4 laps in. Then I decided to do another. And then another. And then three more after that... According to my phone, which documented my ride, I rode for 1h 12m 43s, for a total of 14.77 mi, at an average speed of 12.19 mph. That means I did 9 laps, or 3 circuits, of my usual ride. What the hell? I couldn't do 5 mi. yesterday without feeling like Death was chasing me, and I'm mostly sure that's the only reason I was able to do that. I mean, I made sure I was exerting myself (I read that as long as you maintain over 10 mph, the ride will be an effective workout), but I didn't know that I could do so much more by toning it down just a little. Wow. That does raise this question though: what is better for cardio workouts? Endurance or exertion? Would I be better to keep up doing my usual 5 mi. while really pushing myself, or should I up it to 10 mi. or so while toning it a bit back? Logic is telling me the latter, but I don't know about these things... Edit: Monteballer, I'm riding this exact model of Specialized Rockhopper 29er. I was hesitant spending any big bucks at first as well, but when you get past, say, $600, you enter a whole other tier of bikes. Hell, my ~$900 Specialized is considered a beginner bike. Honestly, I figured it was for health, and I might find another hobby I'd enjoy, so I sprang for it. The 29ers are nice, the Rockhopper especially, because they are like a blend of road and mountain bike. Lock the front fork, increase tire pressure a bit, and you have a bike that handles the streets very well. Unlock the fork, drop the pressure for some grip, and hit the trails. Honestly, however, I don't know much about that particular bike you posted. I'll leave that for someone else. Last edited by Magoo; 08-18-2012 at 06:12 AM. |

Spend good money on a bike, because the quality will show. I bought a $350 Gary Fisher bike from a specialty store. The bike itself is decent and has OK construction, but in all reality it's a piece of ****. I bought it April 2011 and rode trails maybe 3-4 days a week from June-September. I am hesitant to ride it because the remaining stock parts on it are trashed. I gave it maintenance and took care of it, but the general quality of the bike is lacking. And the absolute worst thing would be the bike ****ting itself while you're in the middle of something intense. I've only spent one day riding this summer, as opposed to almost every day last. I need a job and a new bike. Road bike or mountain bike, I'd stay away from WalMart. Last edited by StealingYerMail; 08-18-2012 at 01:19 PM. |

see i had a similar problem im 16 and in pretty great shape but i didnt run very often. One week both of my friends were out on vacation, so i went for a night jog and i couldnt get very far at all till i had to turn back. First i canged my breathing from regular breathing to inhaling 3 times then exhaling (in in in out). this help astronomically and i got about 2 miles farther than my pathetic distance. Since then i increased my distance by 2 blocks each night. After 3 weeks of doing this I can run 6 miles and im finally ready for the pt with my marine corps recruiter.

Okay, I updated the first post for the week's total ride time, distance, and average speed. I think that should be enough to judge progress by, but if anyone thinks I should flesh out the updates a bit more, please make suggestions! I wanted to keep it streamlined, so a bunch of updates won't make the original post cluttered and difficult to read. I think I'm gonna balance endurance and exertion. Monday and Thursday will be exertion (go for improving average speed), while Tuesday and Friday will be endurance (distance rides). Wednesday will be rest day, as will the weekend. |

Okay, updated for this week's results. I was only able to get two days of riding in because of my work schedule. However, I now feel confident I can ride for 1 hr. per night at steady-state paces. After a few weeks of that, I'm going to experiment with HIIT (high-intensity interval training). It's only been a couple of weeks, but the improvement is definitely noticeable! Liking this. |
