I believe he was referring to emissions and CAFE requirements before the car is put on the market. It would make sense, the auto manufacturers are doing just about everything to meet them as they get more and more stringent.

Drove my dad's automatic Tacoma today across town. I turned the car off with the truck in neutral and couldn't figure out why I could get the key out for about a good minute.

Emissions here have gone to computer read only on OBII cars. No more tailpipe tests. Vehicles 1987 or older do not require tests at all. Which is stupid. If I was driving a modded beater as a DD it would be '87 or older. You do not see the junkers puking smoke on the highways as much though. '88+ junker are going to scrap.

'96 and '97 still require a pipe test.

In Ontario, anything north on Huntsville doesn't have to do an e-test at all.

“But Lord,” asked Gabriel, “Is this not too generous to these Canadians?”

And God replied, “Just wait and see the neighbors I shall inflict upon them.”

Only time I've heard of an OBD2 car getting sniffer'ed in Jersey is if the tech suspects the cat converter's been tampered with. And most of them really don't give a **** so it's got to be blatant for that to happen.

Manual isn't dead, I've been car shopping for the past 3 months and all the cars I want are in manual! I live in SF where it's very hard to drive manual because of the steep hills (I live on a hill) and while I enjoy driving manual, I just don't have the patience to do it everyday in a hilly environment. I ride a motorcycle and it's manual of course, but it's so easy to ride a motorcycle and start on a hill, where in a car I don't have that "feel". Can't explain it, but on a motorcycle I'm just better at feeling the engine, knowing when to upshift and downshift, starting from a hill is a piece of cake for me, where in a manual trans car I dread it. I'm just more uncoordinated in a manual trans car, where on a motorcycle I'm pretty awesome at it.

Some newer manuals have a "hill hold" that helps with this. Its kinda weird when all the cars I had before this didn't have this.
To learn stick my dad took me out driving on a back road, on a hill, and told me to pull out. And it was steep. We did this until me and the clutch got a lil hot lol.

My last car was a automatic, and I will admit I do miss it during my short in town commute to work. But its not a big deal.

I've been driving manual for years, but made my primary car a manual a few months ago and I'm just now getting comfortable with a steep grade.
