Will that still be true ten years from now? I am skeptical, given rising diesel prices and super-high efficiency gasoline engines, that consumers will be clamoring for diesels in a decade. I may be wrong, it is just a feeling.

The durability argument for diesel engines was built on high displacement, relatively inefficient (in regards to horsepower for displacement), simple engines without much in the way of emission control standards. Do not make the mistake of assuming that that durability is available in modern passenger cars (or light trucks for that matter). The "diesel engines last forever" argument is a myth. Its a good myth and one that makes me a lot of money but it is a myth.

We have an '11 TDI 4 door Golf. 49k miles, not a single problem, and the trip computer is saying average MPG is 39.1. And that's mostly city driving. My wife has a 17 mile drive to work, 7 miles of that is on I-95, and the rest is on surface streets with speed limits of 35-45 MPH.

While I love the GTI's, the sportiness of the TDI and the economy make it a double whammy!

The recent TDI's have fun factor. I love getting on the pedal of my wife's. Granted, it is no GTI, but with the torque, that thing moves! Sits nice and low, has a wide stance and takes turns and winding roads really well. I love driving it out in the roads in the mountains.

If you can wait a year, you'll be able to start getting the Golf GTD, which is the best of both worlds, brand new in North America.
