Free Super Beetle!

Well I figured it was about time I jumped on here and show this bad boy off. This will be a long post simply because I'm super excited and tend to ramble when I'm like this. So I apologize ahead of time for this..

I recently was the lucky recipient of a very good condition 1972 Super Beetle for the awesome price of $0 It was a friend of mine's, and long story short, he needed the space before he was allowed more toys so this one had to go. The reason I was given it was simply the fact that he knew I would do something cool with it, and not sell it to make a profit. This is personally my first beetle, although I've always held a small facisination with them. A buddy has a pretty neat late 60's baja standard beetle (although the motor and suspension are very tired on her now) that I've bombed around in a bit but no major driving.

Here's some eye candy for you ladies and gents, tell me what you think (It just got done raining before these pictures):

My friend's 2yr old as driver, me copilot:

Now onto the nitty gritty. As far as I know it's the stock dual port 1600 motor w/ Auto Stick transmission (maybe a conversion to a 4spd in the future we'll see). No real upgrades as far as I can tell, stock pea shooter exhaust, Solex Pict 34-3 carb. Did include brand new tires mounted on the stock rims, so another plus there. I gotta add, as far as I can see this thing is SOLID. Just surface rust on some areas, nothing truly bad, and that says something because this is a MN car. It does look like at one point it was repainted from red to blue (unless VW used blue primer). But paint condition aside, all looks good.

Unfortunetely it currently does not run. Did a quick point cleaning and adjustment and stole the distributor cap and wires from my friends beetle because my plug wires were rodent abused. Got fresh fuel to the carb (leaking and needs a rebuild though). Got it to pop off a bit but not take off and idle. Sounds and looks like the pushrods are way out of adjustment. I did order an ignition tune up kit and carb rebuild from JBugs that will be here later this week, so once they're here I can see if she'll run for me.

I need to get it into the shop and up on the lift to see what I'm working with here before I start jumping the gun and modify things, but from initial impression it looks like I have a very workable base for something cool without completely breaking the bank.

What do you guys think? Here is a possible end product to build:

Sweet deal, I have a soft spot for baja bugs. I even came across a really nice one that is local to me but I don't have the cash for it. I like what you are thinking for eventually turning yours into.

Used to get driven to school in one of those from K-6 - spring/summer/fall were OK early cold winter mornings I swear it was colder inside the damn thing than outside most of the time.

Chop it
Slam it
vert or gullwing doors
that is of course after you get it running first.

I think it is because you can go basically any path with them.
They aren't my thing, but I have seen some neat ones.
