Scotch is great but whiskey in general is a art. I spent the christmas before last with friends comparing different whiskeys all week. Crown Royal was deemed best of the cheap whiskey (not that cheap though). Glenlivet over Glennfiddich. Jameson as your entry good and cheap whiskey. Best whiskeys are to try scotch's, Irish whiskeys (Jameson is a nice beginner) and canadian whiskey's. The whiskey from Canada's east coast are very much in a classic scotch tradition, so much they have been court cases (which failed) over the use of glen in the name. Rye whiskey's are underrated as most are not true rye whiskeys (and generally considered as cheap do to their blended nature) however Gibson's has the only true all rye whiskey which I must say is exquisite. Try some Gibson's. Get the 18 or the very expensive blends for something different.

Sencha, I see Gibsons is a Canadian Rye. I have read that other Canadian Ryes are mostly blended, and not as much rye in them. I will have to try Gibsons. I was wondering though, have you tried any American Ryes? American Law states that they have to be made with at leat 51% rye in the mash to be called a Rye. Some popular names are Sazerac, Old Overholt, Rittenhouse, Jim Beam (yellow label), Wild Turkey Rye, etc. :American Rye | Poison of Choice

Yep I've sample a couple, never bought any bottle of them yet. Not a whole lot of american whiskeys available in our government owned LB's Sadly any rye in Canada is viewed as the whiskey for the common's (Crown Royal being the echelon -overrated, by far not the best- as it was created for the king) and in most bar or club type establishments it is what they assume you mean when you ask for a whiskey. Most people think your either drinking rye or "the good stuff". It is considered the low end whiskey. Only in classier or pubs will they differentiate as in what type you want. But you are correct that most Canadian rye's are heavily blended. I can't tell you which Gibson it is as they have of course various products but all are fairly good. My friend swears by them. Edit: Alberta Premium I believe has it's entire line to be 100% rye. It's low cost (by Canadian standards), tastes good, but near impossible to get if not Canadian. Anytime you get the chance try it but read the bottle very carefully.

I finished my bottle of Highland Park 12 the other week and just replaced it with a bottle of Glenmorangie 12 Lasanta (finished in sherry cask). I can pick up on the sherry aftertaste, makes for an enjoyable change. I think there's less peat in Glenmorangie than there was in the Highland Park 12. Again, not a scotch I'll be drinking neat (like I did with the Glenfiddich 12), but a small splash of water makes it very palatable. | |

Thanks for the suggestion, Mar; I'm always on the look out for new Islay single malts. The above link I posted offers delivery of Bunnahabhain to the US - I just sent off for bottles of the 12 year and the 18 year. I'm sure you Canadians can get it from them, too. Quote:
