It's a region where the malts are characterized by salty, smoky overtones. Someone in the thread had a breakdown of all the regions.

put it away, start on something mellow. bring it back out when you're ready. it won't go bad.

Glenmorangie 18.

My girlfriend works at a Ritz-Carlton cocktail lounge that specializes in scotch.

She pours $600+ an ounce singles on a daily basis and knows more about them than any person I've ever met.

Glenmorangie 18 is a definite compromise between taste and cost.

So last night I was curious about the taste of Laphroaig and poured myself about half an ounce and sipped it for a bit. Well first off it smells kind of like cough syrup, off the break it gives a burning sensation like I drank rubbing alcohol, but it did go down a bit smooth with a smokey after taste with a silky finish.

What's the cost of glenmorangie 18?

I agree. If you are set on trying it again, I suggest a 2:1 scotch to water ratio. I've read keep the scotch and water at room temp. Use filtered or bottled water if possible.

The boring ones.

Try Glenlivet 12 yr - it's decent, tame, and about $40 a bottle.
