I'd like some single malt suggestions. After drinking Dewars for a while I've been trying some single malts. So far I've had: Glenfiddich 12 yr. The Glenlivet 12 yr. The Isle of Jura Superstition. Superstition was too peaty for me I ended up giving the bottle to my mother. I prefer the Glenfiddich over the Glenlivet, so far. based on my limited experience, what would you suggest I try next? |

Aberlour 10 year is excellent... Very smooth.

I had a friend in NY who was a big scotch guy. Every time I tried it I have never been a big fan. He had some Laphroaig that he let me try..leading me to believe that I only like fancy expensive scotch. Maybe I just have an unsophisticated palate, but I'd rather drink a $20 bottle of rum or vodka which I find much more enjoyable than a $20 bottle of scotch...or a $70 bottle of absinthe which I find more enjoyable than a $70 bottle of scotch.

Laphroaig 10 year and quarter-cask are both excellent, but are also very peaty/salty. Ardbeg 10 year and Lagavulin 16 year are both Islay malts, like Laphroaig, but are notably more gentle and 'refined' tasting. All of these are slightly higher proof than most scotch, to better preserve the flavor. I used to drink Glenlivet 12 year and Nadurra, as well as the Balvenie 15 year, but started down the Islay road several years ago with the Laphroaig and haven't looked back since. Less harsh scotch tastes boring to me now. drg should try the A.H. Hirsch 16 year bourbon.

Dalwhinnie 12year triple wood is a great intro to single malts. Very very smooth but plenty of character. I usually have that, Laphroig and a random third for a good intro to scotches for visitors. It gives good brackets from mellow to strong.
