I guess when they sorta brushed over a few seasons, they needed to give people a realistic idea of how long this has been going on.

My guess? The outbreak originated at the prison. All kinds of nasty stuff (MRSA, etc) grows/thrives in prisons. Just speculating, as I've never read the comics.

Remember when Rick made the comment to the group, prior to entering the prison yard, that it looked like the prison "fell early"?

Cons are often transported to regular hospitals, though escorted by guards, when injuries and illnesses are more severe than the infirmary can deal with.

This may also explain why the government troops were in the hospital where Rick was comatose, shooting the patients. Shane made a comment in one of the episodes (end of season 1 I think) talking about them "just shooting everyone". Could have been a knee-jerk reaction on the part of the government to contain the disease, and this was also being done elsewhere....or maybe it was a result of intel indicating the outbreak originated at that specific hospital.

Now, the real twist would be.....one of the criminals involved in the initial pursuit/shoot-out in the very first episode was the carrier.

Makes sense the prison fell early. The cell block they cleared out for the cons, at least it looked to me, like all the prisoners were executed at the doors of their cells.

Wow . . .

that might explain the cuffed and headshot prisoners in the second cellblock the group cleaned out.

Could have been some illegal bio-weapon testing done on the prisoners prior to the outbreak?

at least according to the comic, there wasn't anything like that regarding the prison... but thats not to say they wouldnt throw something like that into the show, as another way to diverge from the comic's storyline.

Do they explain in the comic how it started?

Maybe it has two states? A semi-dormant state with very slow growth cycle that allows it to hide from the immune system so that it cannot become overwhelmed by a living, active response. Spreads out, colonizes, but otherwise keeps a low profile so as not to trigger a response. Second stage, after it detects the host dying, activates it and kicks things into over drive. Replicating itself enough to over power the now limited defence response, because everything becomes localized. Replaces parts of the tissue, and the parasite then controls the host?

That way, if you contracted the dormant strain while alive, it stays dormant. But get bit by a carrier of the active strain? Well, it is already kicked into high gear and also kicks whatever you already have into high gear as well.

Any other theories on what direction the writers will take?
