I'm not sure what you guys are complaining about?
If the brother had hunted with the proper arrows then the deer wouldn't of gotten away and wouldn't of been able to be eaten. I think that was kind of the point no? Maybe he was hunting it in a way that he could heard it towards camp? Instead of carrying it himself?

I'm assuming that's how it would be done without the proper gear and vehicles. Maybe the writer's assistants had to look up out-dated hunting styles to apply to this band of scavengers.

I honestly think the way most things are done, may not the best choice for each particular event, but if it causes a future event, like them realizing how close to camp danger has wandered, then it's not necessarily bad writing.
