The nice thing about the AR platform there is plenty of parts out there to suit all tastes.

I built an AR Pistol Lower last year (Had to sell it off before I bought the upper) I used a Spikes Lower and a DPMS LPK. Like Pillage said, some good armorer's tools are a good start. What type of upper are you looking at?

he has an AR barrel wrench on its way (bought it off me) should do most of what he will need. but he will need some soft Jaws for a vice... some How to books wouldn't be bad either. torque specs are always good to know. I love my AR. built it from parts. I don't think there are two parts on it with the same manufacturer...... Take your time, do it right, do it the way you want it, and have fun with it. It took me about a year to finish mine and over $1500 but I have exactly what I wanted in a black rifle.

Finished building my Toy AR last year. New Toy Floated barrels two stage triggers are great for accuracy, usually competitive shooting. The one in the link is my plinking gun it will also be the one I will use for run and gun competitions. I also have an Armalite national match for shooting high power. If you are planning on shooting matches or using heavier bullets you will need a match grade barrel. They are generally a bull barrel that have a nice tight twist. The one on my built one is 1-7 my armalite is 1-8. Each is capable of shooting an 80 grain bullet. A two stage trigger is usually adjustable in pull weight. The first stage is generally light and hits a point where it stops. The second stage is the part that is more adjustable. The break weight can be adjusted from ounces to pounds depending on the trigger. A floated barrel was described once already. The one on my Armalite is what they called tubed. The barrel floats inside the tube. The sights are attached to the barrel that way you get a true sight picture. Your sling would be attached to the hand guard so when you are in position with it your body will pull on the guard not the barrel. Like I said above usally a floated barrel is used for the competitions. The only mags that I use are the 20rnd colt mags that still use the metal followers. They feed really well. Also I use a single rnd bobsled mag. That is used for high power comp. Also 80 grain bullets have to be feed one at a time. Also a good source for parts is Shooting Supplies, Reloading, Gunsmithing, Hunting, Ammunition, Gun Parts & Rifle Scopes — MidwayUSA. This may or may not have helped, but enjoy, have fun, and be safe. |

I got my complete upper from GGG. It is their dominator-1. Floated 1-7 twist barrel. Flat top with full rails. It also has colapseable front and rear sights. The company was also great to deal with even though I had to wait a few months to get it.
