Hi! and a question about teaching

Hi! I've actually been a member here for a little while, and I'm more of a reader/peruser than an actual poster, seeing as how I'm really new to paintball and don't know much what's going on; but, you guys have really helped -- even if I don't post all that much!

Anyways, as my inaugural post, I've got a question for a family member. My sister has been pathetically searching for a teaching job since... forever. She's got an elementary ed degree, and apparently the school system hasn't worked in her favor. I'm looking for anybody to make a connection with in the elementary school systems of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, or Delaware. Are you or any of your immediate family members an administrator or teacher or anything? You guys usually give good feedback, whether it's to say yes or no or maybe so. I'd really appreciate it... she's over here every night typing up resumes and sending out letters, and I just thought I'd give it a shot.

Any help, also appreciated. Feels like we've tried everything. THANK YOU!!!

Last time I heard, the Philadelphia area was looking for teachers all the time.
I seem to recall that they were recruiting janators to fill in.
Tell her to get her name on the Substitute list for surrounding school districts.
The longer she subs in the better chance of a full time gig when one comes up. (my mother started as a sub and got a full time position when one came up)
Also, make sure she has her entire transcript. If any of it is missing, they may overlook her as not having enough credentials

^ if she can hook her up with any form of employment, I'm sure it would. Her family is getting sick of her (I'm a friend if you guys couldn't tell).

Not sure what part of jersey she/you are from but the with a number of family members in the education system I can tell you there are a couple places to start. The sub list is a good start but if she has her certs and is desperate send her toward the more economically challenged areas, Camden/Trenton/Newark/Philly public, not the nicest school districts but she will be doing more of a public service than just teaching the kids in Cherry Hill. Special Ed is a big selling point as well as specialized/advanced teaching degrees, so if she hasn't started toward additional education herself she most likely will need to start. Let me know what part of the state she is from and I'll ask if anybody knows of any openings or pointers where to start.

It seems to be surprisingly hard to get into the public school system for elementary ed. My wife is a certified teacher here in Michigan and has never found a public school job in the greater Detroit area since she graduated from college in 2003. She has been working in charter schools, which are non-union and pay considerably less, but at least its a job. So, if she has been focused on applying to public schools she might want to try expanding her search to other school types. Charter (if your state has them) and occasionally private schools seem to have pretty high turnover and are therefore always hiring.

If anyone has a connection in a metro Detroit public school (other than Detroit itself) for my wife, I wouldn't mind hearing about it either.

my sister actually subs for the camden school district now, but she's not getting anywhere with it... as a matter of fact, she got "hired" last year, as a full time teacher, but the school board didn't approve her in time so she thought she was going to have a job come september but it didn't work out, so she was stuck. public schools are impossible to get into unless you know somebody. that's why i came here -- you guys are my LAST HOPE!! :]

I would recommend that she try craigslist.org in her area

I would recommend that she try craigslist.org in her area.

If she can't get a job with a public school system, the parochial schools are a good alternative. Beyond that, she could become a private tutor for kids in her area. Many parents are choosing to home school their children. The often call on the services of a tutor to help teach their child(ren) a tough subject or all of the subjects.

My sister teaches at a parochial school in Florida and tutors kids outside of that to help them to get better grades so they don't fail a grade. There have been years that she's made as much or more money tutoring than at her teaching job (she teaches art to elementary age students).

At the very least, it would give her something to add to her resume or even job interview skills.

http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/edu/

http://delaware.craigslist.org/edu/

There are other cities listed in those states on the main page of www.craigslist.org. I chose those because they were the largest listings for those states.

Hmm..

Has she tried teachers-teachers.com? Might want to look into putting her stuff on Pa Educator as well if she hasn't already. I'd post more but I don't have any idea how to complete the task she is trying to do myself. Hope that helps a little.
