I only really hear the noise when it's sitting in neutral and the clutch pedal isn't engaged. As soon as I engage the pedal, the noise stops.

It does make some noise while driving, too, but I already know it's a worn TC bearing, my mechanic checked it out and said it wasn't anything to worry about and not worth the cost of tearing down my TC and replacing it.

If it is the throwout bearing.... then it definetly will have an impact on performance. When they fail, usually, that means you can no longer use your clutch to change gears. Thats best-case scenerio. Worst case is the bearings fall into the bellhousing, and cause all sorts of havoc.

Mine failed last summer. Like mustangii said, it would make a loud rattle any time I touched the clutch. So probobly NOT what is happening to yours.

Your clutch-disk could also be warped? That would cause a stutter when you shifted, usually into first.

Apart from trans-related issues, is your drive-shaft tight? Maybe your CV-joints, or yokes are worn, causing slop in the drive line. This only shows up when its under load (ie clutch is not being touched).

Just last month mine was making a "tapping" sound when in gear that went away when I pushed in the clutch. Though it was the trans/clutch at first, then noticed all the slop in my driveline. Fixed that, and it went away.

There's definitely a bit of slop in the rear driveshaft, it needs a larger shim that I'm honestly not brave enough to install yet.

Clutch was checked out with the TC and was reported to be in good shape, and nothing's changed since then.

There's no stutter when shifting gear, and no slipping.

Just getting started on this Heep, and found a good donor parts XJ. Did I mention this one has 270K on it?

The underside is trashed, it has a bad speed sensor, so it doesn't shift properly, and the steering needs rebuilt.

In my basement is a racing radiator, rebuild kits for the steering, a rough country 4" lift and brand new 30x15's

Now what I really need is a garage and a crew who knows what they are doing and can work for Pizza and beer.

2012s are nice they get 2 more mpg and have 185 hp on the v-6

I am thinking of trading in my 2006 wrangler for one.
