This. Unless it is for fun I never ride when I "have to" be somewhere at a certain time. If I do I leave hours early. Riding a bike requires that you not fall into a routine or be rushing to get somewhere and worrying You have to feel like it and feel like being careful. If you use it to commute you often fall into some routine

Agreed with this. I don't have much riding experience outside of a few dirt bikes, and the times that I test ride.

I've tested everything from 250 SUMO's to 1 litre sport bikes, and honestly, the speed is cool and all, but absolutely terrifying if you're not used to it.

Have the option to get a KLR 04 for 2200 or an 06 honda XR650L for 2700...

Any suggestions on this?

All I know is that they're the 2 best 650 Dual Sports on the market according to guys I rode with. Maybe go read reviews and shootouts between the 2? See if there are any big differences. The prices seem pretty reasonable, I think the Honda might be the better deal.

Cursory google browse on Thumper forums:

Honda > Kawi for Off-road use
Kawi > Honda for the road

Both suck in stock condition, both are solid platforms. Honda is taller.

Yeah, I'm 6'2" according to my doctor. 6'4" to everyone else. I can straddle a KLR with both feet on the ground just fine.

As far as damage goes klr has a dented tank and honda has a torn up plastic panel.

I'm liking the honda for the off road use a LOT.

St Jimmy I'm beginning to think you're ahead of me by a few years and my exact clone... Have a Alienware laptop and a motorcycle already? Yeesh!
