One of the things I thought was great is that Hobbiton is now made from permanent buildings, with real fireplaces etc. instead of the temporary sets from before. They're leaving them in place (taking the furnishings though but still). Can you imagine owning that property? That would make the best paintball field ever...you could sleep in the houses and party the night before at the Green Dragon.

My guess is that the creation of "Hobbiton" was part of the package deal with the New Zealand government. Basically, NZ gave them tax breaks worth 50-100 millions of dollars, because they expect to make back a billion dollars from tourists who want to see "Tolkiens world".

This all came about because Peter Jackson thought that NZ was getting too much like Hollywood with its unions, and local governments charging fees for everything. He threatened to move everything.

When all this filming has wrapped up, he will have left a Tolkien disneyland for fans.

They've finally made dwarves more fearsome and agile. I'm a huge fantasy rpg geek (AD&D-dragonlance, forgotten realms, Everquest, Warhammer) and dwarves were always regarded as some of the most fearsome warriors ever. However most films never portrayed them as such, but rather as comical and awkward at times. The average human would get rocked by a dwarf in the fanstasy realm.

I'm happy to see Jackson's respect for dwarves as a powerful, demi-human race. (Yeah, I'm only 5'2, but that has nothing to do with it. Wolverine is also supposed to be 5'2. Remember he was always called a runt in the comics, but Hugh Jackman doesn't appear to be a runt.)
