Damn, so its pre 1900 I figure, that is older than mine I think! you should ask on the smith and wesson collector forums, lots of knowledge there. get a photo too!

I can't help you much on specific dates, but it looks to me to be a Model 4 or 5, the latter of which was last produced 1895 (according to some Google scrounging). That picture is not of a S&W-branded gun so I'm just shooting in the dark anyway, which is probably no worse than any of my other guesses.

If you're planning on shooting it, have a gunsmith look it over first.
