Inconsistencies aside (it IS a movie) they did a fantastic job recreating the feel of the war in a way that the audience could imagine being there. I remember a lot of negative (and positive) critiques just due to the amount of blood and gore. It definitely pushed that envelope for the time.
i can't even begin to imagine it. I bet the longest part must have been the boat ride to the beach and the final minute before that ramp went down. hearing the gun fire, the explosions, the screams. It must have been worse not knowing what was beyond the ramp compared to being on the beach.
