updated version of his bill does not criminalize mere possession of altered imitation guns, but rather possession of them in commission of a crime
If they stay true to this point I have no issues if this passes.

to penalize the use of an imitation firearm in a crime if its required colored markings are removed, disguised or concealed. If passed, the bill would also ban real firearms from being doctored to look like a toy.
I'm ok with that. If So & so wants to take the orange marker off the tip of his fake 9mm while going to do a robbery, then he deserves to get punished for being an idiot.

Now they would need to define concealed. Driving to an airsoft game with it tucked in his holster, that could present a problem. It in it's bag zipped up in the trunk, hopefully that won't be a problem.

the problem is once the door is open - historically speaking - has something political/legal EVER stayed true to the good intentions it started with?

I see some dummy not related to airsoft or paintball mil-sim committing a crime and the legit players being inadvertently punished.

Well that's true, but paintball markers have been used by law enforcement (riot control) and it hasn't really created a black eye for us players. We'll just have to see I guess.

Its never a good idea to leave any ruling up to the higher ups. We all know what they say pretty much goes out the door the moment something bad happens that they feel they can benefit from.

Pretty sure robbing someone with a fake gun is already considered assault, since the person being robbed perceives it as real. This may just formalize that because it is a particularly big issue in Michigan?

This post is the exact kind of post we need to protect our sport. We as Paintballers need to keep up on upcoming bills and laws that may effect our sport. It was the efforts of California Paintballers that amended Cal SB 798 last year so markers were excluded. SB 798 could have had disastrous effects on the sport not only in California but nationwide. If it had passed other states would have started laws like SB 798.

As I read the proposed law, Mich S.B. 779, yes it does not effect us, and it looks to be a real good idea. However, it hasn't been signed into law yet and can be amended before it is signed. It must be watched carefully by us and others like us. Be ready to make your phone calls and e-mails if it does get ammended.

There is no national association of Paintballers like like other sports. Groups like PADI, The Surfrider Foundation, or the NRA, look out for the political aspects of their sport. Some times they can assist political leaders in writing good, sane, and enforceable laws. We dont have that yet. We at the "grass roots" level must keep an eye out for these proposed laws and get the word out so we can make the calls and e-mails. If we dont do that, we wont be playing Paintball in some areas of this country, or other countries.

Good lookin out DSA!
