We used to have secrets... heck, the NYTimes can keep Harry Potter secrets, but blabs to the world every time they learn about a new government tool.
Yeah, this really is an old story. I think it's about 6 months old. The type of phones vulnerable are Sprint/Nextel devices. I don't really see the danger, since Sprint/Nextel are the suck for service and support. That said, I recall them being legal(warrant was signed) wiretaps.

Well that's a relief. We all know the government would never perform warrantless wiretaps.

Whew! That's a load off my mind...

Check your ipods lately???? Check your comp and online activities????? They watch every move. I bet everytime the word scenario tank pops up, we are hit on. Since the Ft. Dix incendent, I bet paintball forums are watched very closely. Only way you won't be noticed, if you fall off the grid completely or change your name every so often. They still know what you buy and purchase, even if you pay cash. So don't be afraid, this has been going on for a very long time.
Later,

Aren't cell phones supposed to give you brain cancer anyway?
If "they" really want to listen to my idiotic conversations, enjoy. Nothing really racy or titillating lately. Lots of happy girlie conversations with female friends catching up. Talking with parents and whatever. I'm not that interesting.

I've come to the conclusion that if you are truly worried, you are screwed unless you live entirely "off the grid." I'm law abiding enough to cope, since I rather enjoy running water, flushing toilets (YES they have them up here...), electricity, and internet. Granted, I'm not going to line up with people when they start to implant identity chips or anything- I just figure that weather it's made legal or not the government will be doing it anyway. After all, it's the government. I seriously doubt any particular set up of government would entirely be able to avoid going into such for the good of the group vs the individual nonsense.

I'd like to see some evidence that any turned off cell phone can be remotely activated and used as a bug. I think the tin foil hats help protect against this.

Matt - most of these phones go into sleep mode, so they arent really shut down. Only way to shut it off is to pull the battery pack from the back, unless you would hack in a physical switch.

Then it would be as simple as waking a computer off a lan connection.

I'm not really surprised.

It is known that any non-cordless HOME phone can be used to wiretap. Basically, when law enforcement is issued a warrant, the phone company sends a signal to the phone for a "no ring" connection, even though the receiver is down.

SO, same likely goes for cell-phones. Most are run by hackable software, so anything is possible.
