Old cars... gotta love 'em!

Just walked by my old '64 VW bug this morning and *sniff sniff* that smells like gas!

Sure enough... look under the back and gas is dripping away. Open the hood and an old fuel filter and hoses are leaking like crazy.

Luckily I have extra gas line and filters under the hood. 5 minutes later it's all fixed with new hose and filter. Piece of cake... but now I smell like gasoline.

I LOVE being able to work on my car MYSELF, no stinking ripoff mechanics for this car. Old VW's rule.

The WORST part of it was I FILLED it all the way up yesterday afternoon... NOW I have a little over 3/4 tank.

That's about 3 gallons or $9.68 down the tubes. Bummer. The fix was FREE though... and it's now in better shape than before.

Just thought I'd share.

1964 VW Beetle with steel sliding sunroof.
Dad bought her in Germany in 1963 while stationed over there in the Army. Military ferried back and in the family ever since.
Beauty ain't she?

Nice car.... but now you have a reportable release of a toxic substance on your hands.

I hate being an engineer..this was one of the first things that popped into my head when I read your thread.

Luckily you don't have my address... yet.

Ha ha! Nah... it's all good.

Luckily I keep a large PAN with cardboard in it under the back of the car because of a small oil drip. None leaked onto the ground... a little on the driveway that evaporated cleanly and most dripped into the pan and evaporated quickly through the cardboard. (Lucky it's hot out)

There was still a half gallon of oily gas in the pan and that was disposed of proper. Thanks for the concern though...

They call the dry rotting of the fuel lines "Hitler's Revenge." Your problem would be mosty permanently solved with one of the many stainless fuel line kits that are sold for your car. Nice bug.

No problem.. that's one of those laws you don't know exists until they are there slapping you with a big fine... pia.

It's one of those that was created to monitor Refineries and gas stations, etc..but sometimes gets stuck to home owners.

Schmitti, you're crazy... 1/4 of a tank of a bug's gas is maybe 2.5 gallons. No way a spill that small is "reportable".

Nice car, Brewtt.

I guess the way you look on the brightside on this is the fact that you can actually tell that you lost 1/4 of a tank. I think it was the 1962 or 3 model that was the first to have an actual gas gauge. Before that, you had no gauge at all, so you ran the primary dry, and then switched to the auxilary tank and started looking for a gas station. At least that was the way it was supposed to work...
