Job interview lately???

Why are manhole covers round?

Sell me this pen?

The correct answer to these questions at a job interview (at least for a job that doesn't involve pen sales, or manhole covers) is to say:

"I could tell you that manhole covers are round to prevent them from being slid into the manhole, or I could try explaining the merits of that writing utensil but how about you just cut to the point and just ask me how much bull**** I'm willing to put up with?"

I was asked if I could pass a drug test. This was my response.

I was once asked to explain how I would best estimate how many baseballs would it take to fill the inside of a school bus. And they wanted details on how to come up with that answer and how long it would take...

I have heard the manhole cover one too.

They are psychological questions. The manhole one actually has a correct answer but most of them are gauging your thought process and the actual answer is designed to judge that. The problem is the science behind many of them is not peer-reviewed and tends to be sketchy

I'm hiring a junior IT guy.

I asked if they knew what FSMO roles were, how many there were and if they could name 2.

If they knew the answer, they were likely over-qualified.

Also asked for thier 3 favorite web resources to go to when they had issues they couldn't resolve. Google was assumed to be #1.

Had an interview today, but all the questions were pertinent to the military, so not really useful here.

However, when I'm on the other side of the table, I always ask a question that has no answer. In other words, I make up something (What's a DA Form 9823, and when would you use one?) that the interviewee couldn't possibly know. Why do I ask that? You see too many people who sound awesome, because they have memorized the answers to everything, but I want to see what happens when they run into something they don't know. Because they're going to do that a lot, and I want to see if they just say "I don't know", full stop, or if they say something like, "well, I can't say I've ever heard of that, but the first thing I'd do if someone asked for one, I'd bring up Google and ..." - that's what I want to see, don't stop just because you don't know, keep driving forward and figure it out.

How would you clean out latrines that hadn't been done in 6 months?

Step 1 - find someone of a lower rank
