Best Buy scam

Warning, we received a text this morning telling us have won. $ 1000 gift card from best buy all we had to do was click the hyperlink and enter code 7777. At first I thought wow my reward zone paid off but then I decided to type in the website listed and as I suspected it was invalid. So I googled it and sure enough people all over the states on different carriers are getting this same text and winning code. The hyperlink directs people to a fake best buy storefront website based out of china and from I could gather it appears to be a phishing scam to get your PII.

You have been warned!

Here is a tip: Don't ever click a random link in an email. If I get an email from BB, I go to the BB website and then go from there. Adds maybe 2 minutes but removing a trojan takes a lot longer. I'd start running your computer through malware/anti-virus scans now before entering any personal information.

you're supposed to always type in big company websites too. best buy is just the most recent of the big companies to be used by phishing scams.

Yep, even if you do win something that is "notification by email" typically it will say go to our website/whatever and go from there

The phishing text I got recently that made me laugh told me that as a loyal AT&T customer, I had won an iPad... but the wife and I are on T-Mobile. Silly scammers.

I got one from walmart claiming the exact same thing. The url was walmart.com.biz or something like that. Usually if it sounds to good to be true it is.

Silly?

It costs nothing for them to email a BILLION emails out a day. They get the email addresses by using spiders, purchasing, stealing lists. Popular email systems get hit by dictionary, phrase, name, and brute force attacks (every possible combo), etc.

Maybe 5% of those emails get through, and 5% of those are potential targets, and 5% of those are suckers. Thats 125,000 replies a day.

And while most will not fall for the scam, that mailing list of 125,000 becomes extremely valuable to sell since its a confirmed list of suckers.
