I think I came up with a good idea for home defense...

I have a security system at my house with night vision cameras. I can, if I so choose, watch the cameras over the internet...which mean I could stream the cameras to a smart phone. Very common to do this of course.

It occurred to me that this would be very useful in home defense. You could, say, mount your smart phone to your shotgun for example. You could, in essence "peek" around corners to see what the bad guy is up to (like waiting to bash your head in with a baseball bat).

Is this a good idea, bad idea? Has it / is it being done?

Home defense is best left K.I.S.S. while plausible, not practical.

Agreed with Hick. As for corners, that's why handguns are better than shotguns if you have a lot of close, blind corners. Even a minimal-length shotgun will round the corner 18" before you do, whereas a handgun lets you stay tighter.

If you REALLY want to do this, though, I've seen mounts for attaching iPhones to Picatinny rails. (There's a bullet compensation app for long range shots.)

Interesting thought... Here's a hypothetical question though:

Say someone does break into your house and you utilize this system as you discribed. It's thought out before hand, and you're ready to do what you need to to protect you and yours... Say it's a worse case scenario and you end up killing the intruder... Could you not then be charged with first degree murder?

Just a thought...

The legal what if's in this situation are enough to make me want to cry. The fact of the matter is that a good lawyer could possibly get you thrown in jail forever for it. (depending on the who, what, where and why's)

By far the best plan for home defense is to use the entrenched position plan. Hole up in a room with a shotgun and your cell phone. Call the police and warn the intruder that the police have been called and you are armed. Never a good idea to clear a house room by room unless you are trained to do so.

Even then the likelyhood of getting injured is very high if you don't have the element of surprise. The best plan is to be proactive and make your home look as unappealing as possible to thieves. Nasty little plants with spikes under windows, security lights, locked doors, large dog, etc.

As a last resort you should have means to defend yourself and everyone in the home that is capable should be trained with those means. We also keep cellphones charged in the bedroom (landlines can be cut).

If the worst happens my wife will be calling the police and keeping the babies secured in our "safe area" with her Saiga and XDm while I do my thing gathering intel and either take care of the threat or scare them off.
