Same story on Yahoo. Several people have already stepped up to pay the bill for the kid.

It definitely sucks, you would think his bill would be treated as a on the job injury. Unless maybe he's a volunteer. I'm not sure how that works.

It says that he was off duty. My first thought was that he was a normal lifeguard at a beach, and that if anything, it would be L&I who would take care of it. But the second story says that he was off duty, so L&I would not be involved.

Sucks he was stuck with such a HUGE bill, but he did what was right. He said he had a feeling there was gonna be a bill, just not that big. People in the area are offering to step in to help the family pay it off.

I'm also a lifeguard in Vancouver, the local paper posted this story with a way to donate to his family to cover the remainder of John's medical finances. You can donate at any Chase bank to the account under the name John Cody Clark, the account number ends in 15. Any donations exceeding the remainder of the bill will be donated to pay for Robert's (the boy) medical bill.

Swim smart.
